Sri Yantraश्रीयन्त्र

The best-documented yantra of the Sri Vidya tradition: nine interpenetrating triangles within enclosures, read as a diagram of manifestation.

Hands folded in the seated posture

Wörtliche Bedeutung

The Sri Yantra is composed of nine interlocking triangles — conventionally four pointing upward and five downward — surrounded by lotus petals and a square enclosure with four gates. Its construction is geometrically exacting, and the question of how the intersections should be drawn has a small literature of its own.

Traditionelle Bedeutung

Traditionelle Auslegung
Within Sri Vidya the diagram is read as a map of manifestation from an undifferentiated centre outward, with each enclosure associated with a stage and with specific deities. The centre point, the bindu, is not a decorative origin but the term the tradition uses for the undifferentiated source. Contemplative use of the diagram is structured by the tradition and is bound to its mantra and initiation.

Moderne Forschung
Scholarship treats the Sri Yantra as the visual counterpart of a specific theological system rather than as a universal symbol. Claims that its proportions encode constants of modern physics are not supported by the textual record and are not made by the tradition.
