Concept
Bijaबीज
A seed syllable. It carries no dictionary meaning; its role is set entirely by the tradition and the transmission.

Literal meaning
Bija means seed. A bija mantra is a single syllable, usually ending in a nasalised vowel, which functions as a condensed form associated with a particular deity or principle.
Because it has no lexical content, nothing about its function can be inferred from the syllable itself.
Philosophical meaning
Traditional interpretationThe philosophy of speech developed in these traditions treats sound as a graded manifestation rather than as arbitrary labelling. A bija is located at a specific point in that scheme, which is what the tradition means when it says the syllable is the deity rather than a name for it.
This is a technical claim within a worked-out philosophy of language, not a claim about acoustics.
