A study of the group of ten goddesses as a set — how the grouping arose, what holds it together, and where the lists disagree.

Обзор

The Mahavidyas are a group of ten goddesses treated together as a set. Kali and Tara head most lists; the remaining names vary between sources, and so does their order. Studying them as a group is a different exercise from studying any one of them, and this study takes the group as its subject.

Исторический контекст
The grouping is comparatively late and appears to consolidate in puranic and Tantric material over several centuries, drawing together goddesses with independent and older histories. That the set is assembled rather than primordial is not a diminishment of it; it is a fact about how the tradition organised what it had.

Основные понятия

Традиционное толкование
Traditionally the ten are read as aspects of one Goddess rather than as ten separate powers, each disclosing something the others leave implicit. The sequence is treated as a method of approach rather than a ranking.

Decoded reading

Decoded reading
The founder's reading treats each Mahavidya as the description of an identifiable state rather than as a figure to be propitiated — the narrative details of a form being, on this account, an encoding of a function that becomes legible once read that way. This is presented as interpretation. It is set apart from the traditional and historical registers above deliberately, and it should not be read as what the texts state or what scholarship concludes.
