Initiation. What it confers, and what it is understood to do, differs by school — this is one of the terms where a general definition misleads most.

Initiation into a lineage and its practice. The word is common across Indian traditions and its content is set entirely by the tradition using it.

Традиционное толкованиеIn Saiddhantika Shaivism diksha is held to act on the initiate directly, removing the bonds that prevent liberation, and is a necessary condition for it. In other streams the emphasis falls instead on transmission of mantra, of authority to practise, or of recognition.
Because diksha is what gates access to much of the material these traditions contain, describing it accurately matters more than describing it grandly.
